I am Senior Lecturer and Head of Japanese in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh, and Chief Editor of Japan Forum, the journal of the British Association for Japanese Studies.

My research centres on modern Japanese intellectual and political history: the Japanese New Left, state repression and the Special Higher Police (Tokkō), conservative postwar networks, and Japanese futurology (miraigaku).

This site is where I put things that don’t fit in a journal article: tools, catalogues of archival material, translations in progress and notes on sources.
